After clipping: rugging and checking your horse

Aftercare starts before clipping. Decide who will check your horse and how shelter and rugs will be assessed when weather and work change. The pattern name cannot decide a rug choice.

The whole horse

BHS rugging guidance considers factors beyond temperature, including coat, condition and management. A partially clipped horse still needs individual observation.

Practical checks

Make time to inspect the horse beneath rugs rather than judging comfort from a distance. Tell carers exactly what was clipped and when. Keep the record where everyone can find it.

Exercise

The BHS notes that an exercise sheet may help in wet or very cold conditions where back and hindquarter hair has been removed. Discuss its use with an experienced person.

Follow up

Record comfort and drying after normal exercise. Seek veterinary advice if the horse seems unwell or skin is concerning. Our sister site's Bridlecote rug calculator can help you organise rug-selection questions. Read its assumptions and assess your horse individually.
