When to clip a horse
There is no universal clipping date. CAFRE notes that first and last clips depend on breed, exercise and management. A growing coat is a prompt to reassess comfort during work, rather than an instruction to switch on the clippers.
Keep an observation log
After typical sessions, note workload, weather, sweaty areas and how drying fits the routine. Include changes in turnout and shelter. This gives a professional more useful information than the month alone.
Before repeating a clip
Ask whether the horse still does the same work, whether the previous clip achieved its purpose and whether regrowth causes a practical problem. A diary reminder can prompt a check without committing you to clipping.
When plans change
If work reduces or the horse is unwell, reconsider. Speak to your vet about concerning coat or skin changes rather than trying to solve them through a different blade. Compare partial patterns and arrange aftercare before booking.
